After suffering from random BSOD and system crashing, many users noticed the IO operation at logical block address for disk was retried error in Event Viewer. The error usually indicates that there are some errors with your hard drive.
In addition, the event ID 153 disk error can occur due to inappropriate disk mode, outdated controller drivers, faulty SATA cable, dynamic trick, and even improper power plan. Don’t worry. Here are several effective fixes.
Fix 1. Check the SATA Cable
Many people reported that the event ID 153 IO operation disk error occurs after replacing the SATA cable. Let’s follow the steps below to check the SATA cable.
Step 1. Power off your computer and unplug the power cable, and remove all pre-installed SATA cables carefully from your disk.
Step 2. Use a new SATA cable and plug it into a different SATA port.
Step 3. Power on your computer and re-plug the power cable to see if “The IO operation at logical block address was retried” error disappears.
Fix 2. Update IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller Drivers
Some users reported that the “The IO operation at logical block address was retried” error also happens due to outdated IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Now, follow the guide below to update them.
Step 1. Right-click the Start menu and select Device Manager.
Step 2. Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers category, right-click each driver under it and select Update driver.
Step 3. Select Search automatically for drivers and follow the on-screen instructions to finish the update.
Fix 3. Use Partition Wizard to Check Hard Drive
One of the main reasons for the IO operation at logical block address error is the disk itself. Since the Windows built-in tool often runs into various issues like CHKDSK write-protected, using a professional disk check tool is a more ideal choice. MiniTool Partition Wizard can help you check your hard drive easily and quickly. For that:
Step 1. In the main interface of the MiniTool software, select the hard disk that throws the error and click on Surface Test.
Step 2. Click on the Start now button and wait for the process to complete.
Step 3. If any blocks are marked with red color, it means that there are bad sectors on the disk and you need to shield them or replace the hard drive with a new one.
Fix 4. Disable the Dynamic Tick
The event ID 153 disk error can happen due to the dynamic trick. If you encounter the error on Windows 8, try disabling this feature.
Step 1. Open the Run box, type cmd it, and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter keys to invoke the elevated Command Prompt window.
Step 2. Type the following command and hit Enter. Once done, restart your PC and check if the error is cleared.
bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes
Fix 5. Set Disk Mode to ATA or IDE
For a relatively old version of the Windows operating system, the IDE and ATA disk mode is more suitable than AHCI. If this scenario applies to you, try changing the disk mode.
Step 1. Select the Start menu and click on the Power icon, and then click on Restart with the Shift key pressed.
Step 2. Once you enter into the Recovery Menu, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings.
Step 3. Click on Restart to reboot your computer and press Delete or F2 to enter BIOS.
Step 4. In the BIOS setup, navigate to the SATA Operation/SATA Configuration category and set it to ATA or IDE, and press F10 to save the change.
Step 5. Exit BIOS and wait for your computer to boot into the Startup Settings menu again. Press F5 to boot into Safe Mode with Networking, which enables your system to install proper disk drivers for BIOS.
Fix 6. Adjust Your Power Plan Settings
Some users reported that they got the IO operation error fixed by changing the power plan. Here you may have a try.
Step 1. Open the Run box, type control powercfg.cpl in it, and hit Enter.
Step 2. Select the High performance mode and click on Change Plan Settings.
Step 3. Click on Change Advanced Power Settings, expand Hard disk, click Turn off Hard Disk After, and set its time to higher.
Step 4. Click on Apply and OK to save the change.
Fix 7. Disable the Paging Executive
Disabling Paging Executive can prevent Windows from swapping memory used by device drivers to the paging files, which can help fix the event ID 153 error too.
Step 1. Open the Run box again, type regedit in it, and hit Enter.
Step 2. Locate the following path from the left side:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
Step 3. With the Memory Management key opened folder selected, double click DisablePagingExecutive, set its Value data to 1, and click on OK.
Fix 8. Decrease the TimeOutValue
If none of the above methods work, try decreasing the TimeOutValue in Registry Editor. It has been proven by some people to be useful.
Step 1. Open the Registry Editor like Step 1 in Fix 7.
Step 2. Locate the following path via the left-hand panel.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Disk
Step 3. With the Disk folder selected, double TimeOutValue, set its Value data to 30 or lower, and click on OK. Then restart your computer to make the change take effect.
